How to Create a Modern Calligraphy Alphabet

Hey there!

So you have found yourself in the lovely world of modern calligraphy. Getting started is always the hardest part in anything we do, modern calligraphy is NO exception. Where do you even start?

I have a workbook for you, that allows you to learn the fundamentals of brush calligraphy. It goes in depth on learning how to use your brush marker, and how to form letters. It also dives into creating words, phrases, and digitizing your work. It's everything I wish  I had when I first was getting started. You can get your very own copy here.

Once you understand the concepts, you will be eager to create your own style and your very own modern calligraphy alphabet. This is a tutorial is going to walk you through those steps.

Step 1: Design a Grid

Use a straight edge ruler to create boxes. Use a pencil to create your lines.
For a standard 8.5" by 11" paper create boxes that are 1.25" by 1.25".
Create a grid of 4 by 7 boxes across your page.

Step 2: Pencil Letter

Design each letter within your boxes. Use your imagination to create letters that are unique to you. The magic of penciling is that you can erase what you don't love, and try again. The process takes time, don't rush the process. This is a fundamental step to building your own modern calligraphy style.

Step 3: Ink Your Letters

Choose your desired lettering medium, and use black ink to finalize your letters. If you wish, you can use a fine tip black ink pen to touch up rough edges. I'm using a Tombow Dual Brush Marker in N15

This page you create will be a wonderful reference for you on your calligraphy journey. You can also, digitize your calligraphy alphabet, and print out sheets for your own practing sheets!

What else are your excited to learn about modern brush calligraphy?

XO,
Candice
